About Palladium Metal
About Palladium Metal. Palladium is extremely ductile and is not tarnished when exposed to the atmosphere in ordinary conditions. Like other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), Palladium is expensive, as ore deposits are rare and demand grows due to its important applications. Palladium is found naturally in ores containing other PGMs, i.e., platinum, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and osmium. Most of the Palladium reserves are located in South Africa, but in terms of production, the Russian one surpasses the South African one. Together, the two countries account for more than 80% of global Palladium production.
Palladium Metal Handling. Palladium is an extremely valuable material, so its transportation is usually done using highly safe trucks with trained personal. It is necessary to avoid creating dust, store in a sealed container, also in a cool and dry area.
Palladium Metal Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Palladium Metal are listed below.
- Copper anodic slimes (sulfating roast process/hydrometallurgical refining; coproduced with tellurium/platinum/gold/silver/selenium),
- Copper anodic slimes/nickel refinery anode slimes/Mond process residues (sulfating roast process/hydrometallurgical refining; coproduced with tellurium/platinum/gold/silver/selenium)
Palladium Metal Uses. The uses and applications of Palladium may vary according to its specification. Usually, Palladium is traded in the form of ingots/bars, with a 99.95% purity. However, Palladium can also be commercialized as sponge, powder, and granules/crystals.
