About p-Cresol
About p-Cresol. P-Cresol is a colorless liquid or solid material, with a tarry odor, that consists of a toluene molecule with a hydroxy group substitution at position 4. It can sink, slowly mix with water, and is miscible in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and benzene. This chemical has significance in human and other animals' metabolism. Industrially, it can be produced by fractionation of m-/p-cresol or by alkali fusion with p-toluenesulfonic acid.
Moreover, cresol isomers synthesis methods include alkali fusion of toluenesulfonates, alkaline chlorotoluene hydrolysis, splitting of cymene hydroperoxide, and methylation of phenol in the vapor phase. These processes have different isomer distributions, with methylation of phenol being specifically designed for cresols and xylenols production. Each process holds individual importance.
p-Cresol Handling. P-Cresol should be stored in properly labeled iron or steel containers, separated from explosives, oxidizing materials, and organic peroxides. Since it is hygroscopic and air and light-sensitive, this chemical should be stored under an inert gas in a dry and cool place. Moreover, the storage area should be away from a drain or sewer access to avoid contamination.
p-Cresol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of p-Cresol are listed below.
- m/p-cresol (fractionation; coproduced with m-cresol),
- p-toluenesulfonic acid (alkali fusion)
p-Cresol Uses. The uses and applications of p-Cresol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of p-Cresol are crude cresol (20% o-cresol, 40% m-cresol, 30% p-cresol); and technical grade (98%-99% minimum purity).
