About Oleic Acid
About Oleic Acid. Oleic Acid belongs to the class of organic compounds known as fatty acids and is characterized by a double bond between C9 and C10. It typically manifests as an odorless and colorless liquid, though commercial oil may exhibit a yellow or brown hue. As one of the most prevalent fatty acids in nature, Oleic Acid is commonly found as an ester of glycerol rather than in its free form. Derived primarily from vegetable oils like olive, palm, peanut, sunflower oil, and animal tallow, oleic acid is abundant in various natural sources.
Oleic Acid Handling. Railway tank cars, tank trucks, containers, ships, and aircraft are used for transporting liquid fatty acids. Stainless steel and aluminum are the construction materials normally used for storage and transportation. Storage and transport temperature should be slightly above the solidification point. Oleic acid is flammable (flash point at 189 °C) in its liquid and vapor form, so it should be transported and stored away from heat sources. It has a melting point at 13 °C, so in colder regions it can be found in its solid form (with no additives). Nonetheless, oleic acid is very little toxic. Furthermore, special labeling and handling are not required.
Oleic Acid Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Oleic Acid are listed below.
- Natural oil/fatty acids (palm, rapeseed, tallow) (fractionation),
- Palm acid (selective crystallization),
- Tail oil fatty acid (solvent crystallization)
Oleic Acid Uses. The uses and applications of Oleic Acid may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Oleic Acid are United States Pharmacopeia grade (USP, 99% minimum purity); Food Chemical Codex (FCC) grade (or natural grade); technical grade (varying from 60 to 90% purity, most common being 90%); and free of chicken edema factor (for uses in the food industry).
