About NPK Fertilizer

About NPK Fertilizer. NPK Fertilizer (a.k.a. NPK) designates a group of fertilizers that contains all three major nutrients that are required in agriculture: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). NPK Fertilizers have the important advantage of simplified application, since all nutrients can be dispensed in a single operation. Moreover, each granule of fertilizer has the same composition, ensuring uniform distribution of the nutrients in the soil.

The nutrient content in NPK Fertilizers is commonly expressed as a weight percentage (wt%) of N, P2O5 and K2O, in the respective order. If there are additional numbers in fertilizer grade, the fourth is wt% S and the fifth is wt% MgO.

Each of the main nutrients present in NPK Fertilizers has the following individual effect: nitrogen promotes plant growth, impacting plant size, weight and color; phosphorus promotes the reproductive phase of the plant, i.e., improves the quality and ripeness of seeds and fruits; potassium is responsible for nearly all metabolic processes of the plant which promote the synthesis of proteins and carbohydrates, important components for overall plant functions and immunity.

NPK Fertilizer Handling. NPK Fertilizers are hygroscopic, i.e., they absorb water molecules, and therefore the storage atmosphere should be air-conditioned. They can be stored at the plant in warehouses or in silos, with walls separating different grades of product. From the factory premises, it is usually shipped in bulk, inside polyethylene bags that can range from 40-50 kg bags to 500-1,200 kg big bags.

NPK Fertilizer Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of NPK Fertilizer are listed below.

  • Ammonia + phosphate rock + potassium chloride/potassium sulfate + nitric acid (nitrophosphate route),
  • Ammonia + mixture of sulfuric and phosphoric acids + potassium chloride/potassium sulfate (mixed acid route),
  • Ammonium phosphate + potassium chloride

NPK Fertilizer Uses. The uses and applications of NPK Fertilizer may vary according to its specification. The main forms of NPK Fertilizer are nutrient ratio 1:1:1; nutrient ratio 1:2:3 and 1:1.5:2; nutrient ratio 1:1:1.5-1.7; nutrient ratio 3:1:1 and 2:1:1; and low-phosphate grades such as 15-5-20 and 15-9-15 in wt%. The ratios presented refer to N : P2O5 : K2O. For instance, 15-15-15 and 17-17-17 are weight percent specifications of each nutrient from fertilizers with a 1:1:1 ratio, while 24-8-8 and 30-10-10 are specifications from fertilizers with a 3:1:1 nutrient ratio.
