About Monoammonium Phosphate
About Monoammonium Phosphate. Monoammonium Phosphate (a.k.a. MAP, Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate) manifests as a crystalline salt with a white appearance. It finds extensive utilization within the fertilizer industry as a valuable source of both phosphorus and nitrogen. Notably, it possesses a higher phosphorous content compared to other prevalent solid fertilizers. Additionally, this compound serves important purposes in fire extinguishing applications, while also demonstrating relevance in the fields of optics and electronics.
For a considerable period, Monoammonium Phosphate (MAP) has held significant importance as a granular fertilizer. It possesses the property of being soluble in water and readily dissolves in soil that has sufficient moisture. When it dissolves, the fertilizer's two essential components separate once again, resulting in the release of ammonium and phosphate. These two elements are crucial for plants as they are essential for promoting healthy and sustained growth. Due to the moderately acidic pH of the surrounding solution, MAP proves to be a highly desirable fertilizer in soils with neutral to high pH levels.
MAP is usually produced by two main routes. In the first route, ammonia and phosphoric acid are combined in equal proportions, resulting in a slurry of MAP. This slurry is then solidified using a granulator. In the second method, the two starting materials are introduced into a pipe-cross reactor. The reaction generates heat, causing water to evaporate and MAP to solidify.
Monoammonium Phosphate Handling. Monoammonium phosphate possesses favorable qualities for transport and storage, as it is non-hygroscopic, non-dust forming, and resistant to caking. To ensure its proper storage, it should be placed in tightly sealed containers within a clean, cool, dry, and well-roofed compartment, preferably with a moisture-proof foundation. Piling the bags of 50kg is permissible, with a maximum of 10 layers, while big bags weighing up to 500kg may be stored in up to 3 layers. It is crucial to shield the fertilizer from moisture. During transportation, it is vital to employ suitable means that protect the product from water, precipitation, direct sunlight, and packaging damage. Monoammonium phosphate can be transported via road, railway, and sea. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that this fertilizer is not subject to regulations outlined by RID (Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail) or ADR (Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road).
Monoammonium Phosphate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Monoammonium Phosphate are listed below.
- Ammonia + phosphoric acid, pure (salt formation),
- Ammonia + phosphoric acid, wet-process (salt formation)
Monoammonium Phosphate Uses. The uses and applications of Monoammonium Phosphate may vary according to its specification. Monoammonium Phosphate is usually traded in terms of its N and P2O5 content. Some common grades are 12-52 (12% N, 52% P2O5), 11-52 (11% N, 52% P2O5), 12-61 (12% N, 61% P2O5), and 11-44 (11% N, 44% P2O5).
