About Methylene Chloride
About Methylene Chloride. Methylene Chloride (a.k.a. Dichloromethane, DCM) is a colorless, volatile, nonflammable, liquid chlorinated hydrocarbon with a sweet odor. It emits toxic fumes when heated. It causes damage in the nervous system when inhaled and it irritates throat and nose. Typically, Methylene Chloride is obtained by two processes: methanol hydrochlorination (with other chlorinated hydrocarbons as coproducts – e.g., methyl chloride, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride) and/or substitution chlorination (usually with methyl chloride feedstock).
Methylene Chloride Handling. Dichloromethane must not be stored or transported in vessels made of aluminum and other light metals and their alloys, due to the reactivity of these materials with this chemical. Instead, the use of stainless steel containers is recommended. Contact of the liquid with moisture should be avoided. Bulk quantities of Dichloromethane are shipped in containers, railroad tank cars, tank trucks, and tankers of both the transoceanic and inland-waterway variety.
Methylene Chloride Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Methylene Chloride are listed below.
- Methyl chloride + chlorine (thermal chlorination, coproduced with carbon tetrachloride/chloroform),
- Methane + hydrogen chloride, anhydrous (oxychlorination; coproduced with carbon tetrachloride/chloroform/methyl chloride)
Methylene Chloride Uses. The primary form of Methylene Chloride is with 99.9% minimum purity.
