About Methyl Acrylate

About Methyl Acrylate. Methyl Acrylate, the methyl ester of acrylic acid, is one of the main acrylates, along with butyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate. The term acrylates refers to derivatives of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, such as salts and esters. These compounds were known since the nineteenth century, however only in the 1930s difficulties associated with their production and polymerization were overwhelmed. Over the past decades, acrylates have been building blocks of major importance, widely used in emulsion and solution polymers.

Methyl Acrylate can be produced from several reactions, from acrylic acid, methanol, propylene, acrolein, among others. The most significant route for production of Methyl Acrylate is the direct esterification of acrylic acid with methanol, in plants typically integrated to acrylic acid facilities.

Methyl Acrylate is considered an important acrylic monomer, largely used in acrylic fibers.

Methyl Acrylate Handling. Methyl Acrylate should be kept in tightly closed containers in a well-ventilated place. It must be stored with an inhibitor, at temperatures below 21 °C and away from oxygen and other oxidizers to avoid polymerization. It is recommended that inhibitor and polymerized substances should be quantitively checked once a week at least.

Methyl Acrylate Production. Methyl Acrylate is primarily made from acrylic acid and methanol, so that different Methyl Acrylate manufacturing routes are related to different sources of such raw materials. Thus typical Methyl Acrylate production routes are based on acrylic acid manufacturing, mostly via propylene oxidation and to a lesser extent oxidative carbonylation of ethylene. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Methyl Acrylate are listed below.

  • Methanol + acrylic acid (ester formation),
  • Acrylonitrile + methanol (nitrile alcoholysis)

Methyl Acrylate Uses. The uses and applications of Methyl Acrylate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Methyl Acrylate are typically commercial grades with purity higher than 99 wt%.
