About Lead Metal
About Lead Metal. Lead is one of the most commercialized metals worldwide, ranking fifth behind iron, copper, aluminum, and zinc. This is explained by its unique properties, such as ease of casting, high density, low melting point, acid resistance, softness, and malleability. It was one of the first elements known to be used by humans, with findings dating back to 4,000 B.C. Industrial manufacturing began in the nineteenth century in the USA, growing rapidly at the start of the 1900s with the rise in automobile, chemical, and machine industries. Over 75% of Lead manufactured worldwide is employed in Lead-acid batteries.
Lead Metal Handling. Lead, like other heavy metals, accumulates in the biosphere and builds up over time, hence, in transportation, dust generation should be minimized. Lead should be stored in a dry, covered area, away from food or feedstuffs and strong acids.
Lead Metal Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Lead Metal are listed below.
- Galena (or other lead rich ores) (ore refining),
- Lead bullion (pyrometallurgical refining/Parkes process/Betterton-Kroll process),
- Secondary lead/scrap metals (metal recycling),
- Zinc-lead sulfide ores + metallurgical coke (Imperial smelting process)
Lead Metal Uses. The uses and applications of Lead may vary according to its specification. Mostly used in batteries, pure Lead metal is commonly traded as ingots/bars or blocks, with purity greater than 99.9%. However, other forms of Lead (mainly for Lead compounds, such as oxides) are powder, paste, sheets, pipes, buckles, grids, and rods, depending on the use.
