Iodine Price Outlook. The price of Iodine (United States) increased during November 2025 to 70,900 USD per metric ton, which represents a slight rise of 0.1% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, the prices of Iodine (United States) increased significantly by 8%. Meanwhile, the average price of Iodine (China) amounted to 71,900 USD per metric ton, from 67,500 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the price of Iodine (China) is 0.6% higher than the price one month before.

About Iodine

About Iodine. Iodine (a.k.a. I) is a halogen and its pure form consists of blue to black scales or plates having a metallic luster, with a characteristic odor and acrid taste. It was discovered at the beginning of the nineteenth century, but it was first commercially exploited in 1916. Iodine can be found in small quantities in lots of places in nature, such as waterbodies, rocks, soils, plants, animal tissue, and others.

Chile possesses substantial Iodine reserves linked to sodium nitrate deposits and boasts the world's largest iodine production capacity. As the foremost Iodine producer globally, Chile accounts for over 60% of worldwide production. Following Chile, Japan, and the USA are significant Iodine producers. In Japan, Iodine production is primarily a by-product of natural gas extraction from underground brines found in gas fields. Japan contributes approximately 30% of the global iodine output. In the USA, Iodine is acquired through both blowing-out and adsorption processes.

Iodine Handling. Iodine is transported in packed fiber drums, lined with double-ply polyethylene, that contains 10, 25, or 50 kg. Iodine is easily lost by sublimation. In low temperatures, vapor pressure reduces, decreasing the rate of loss, therefore, storage in cool and well-ventilated areas is recommended. There are no specific transportation, shipping, or safety requirements.

Iodine Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Iodine are listed below.

  • Chile Salpeter (calcium/sodium iodate is treated with sodium bisulfite producing iodine),
  • Brine + chlorine + hydriodic acid + sulfuric acid (blowing-out process),
  • Brine + chlorine + hydriodic acid + sodium hydroxide (adsorption process)

Iodine Uses. The uses and applications of Iodine may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Iodine are commercial crude grade (99.5% minimum purity) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP, 99.8% minimum purity) grade.
