About Hydrogen Peroxide
About Hydrogen Peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide (a.k.a. H2O2, Oxygenated Water) is the simplest peroxide (molecules comprising a covalent bond between two oxygen atoms covalently bonded to one another) in existence. It is a nearly colorless (pale blue) liquid, weakly acidic, and miscible with water in all proportions. It can be found in nature, in living organisms, and in the atmosphere, however, oxygenated water is unstable and slowly decomposes in the presence of light. Hydrogen peroxide began being commercially produced in the 1880s and currently it is mainly used as a bleaching and oxidizing agent in a wide variety of industries.
In 1818, J. L. Thenard first produced Hydrogen Peroxide by reacting barium peroxide with nitric acid. Production on a commercial scale began around 1880. The scale of manufacture and use has increased noticeably with the development of electrochemical processes at the beginning of 1900, and then, with the development of organic autoxidation processes in the 1950s. In addition, another driving force that significantly contributed to the increase of Hydrogen Peroxide in the mid-19th century was its use in the pulp and paper industry. Hydrogen Peroxide is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to chlorine as a bleaching agent. The decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide only generates oxygen and water.
Hydrogen Peroxide Handling. Due to its high oxidizing and corrosive characteristics, hydrogen peroxide should be transported and stored in special containers (stainless steel, 99.5% aluminum, and certain aluminum-magnesium alloys or some plastics). Solutions with up to 60% H2O2 can also be stored in polyethylene tanks, and are compatible with PVDF, PVC, Teflon, and glass. Substances like sodium pyrophosphate, sodium stannate, phosphonic and aminophosphonic acids are used to stabilize peroxide solutions for longer periods of storage. Commercial H2O2 solutions are supplied in bulk by railroads cars (20–50 tons), trucks (20 tons), and ISO containers (20 tons). Also, PE containers with 5-, 30-, 60-L, and 220-L plastic drums and 1 m3 IBCs are available. Solutions containing percentages of hydrogen peroxide greater than 40% are prohibited from being transported by air.
Hydrogen Peroxide Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Hydrogen Peroxide are listed below.
- Anthraquinone (anthraquinone autoxidation process, catalyzed by a palladium compound),
- Isopropanol + oxygen (Shell autooxidation process),
- Hydrogen + oxygen + 2-ethylanthraquinone/amylanthraquinone (anthroquinone process),
- Oxygen (cathodic reduction, Huron-Dow process)
Hydrogen Peroxide Uses. The uses and applications of Hydrogen Peroxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Hydrogen Peroxide are in aqueous solutions with 27.5 wt%, 35 wt%, 50 wt%, and 70 wt% of H2O2 content.
