About Hydrogen Fluoride
About Hydrogen Fluoride. Hydrogen Fluoride (a.k.a. HF, Fluorane) is a colorless to brown liquid or gas. It is soluble in water forming hydrofluoric acid. It is widely used as a component of superacids in the petrochemical industry. Hydrogen fluoride is highly dangerous because when in contact with moisture, it forms hydrofluoric acid which is very corrosive and can cause blindness.
It is available either as an anhydrous form or a 70% aqueous solution. In its anhydrous state, HF is a colorless, corrosive liquid or gas with a boiling point of 19.58°C, demanding rigorous safety precautions.
Historically, HF's commercial use was limited, with early applications in glass etching and metal treatments. However, the 1930s saw the onset of anhydrous HF production, primarily for chlorofluorocarbons. World War II spurred its demand due to needs in aviation fuels, nuclear industry compounds, and expanding chlorofluorocarbon markets, leading to advancements in its production techniques.
Hydrogen Fluoride Handling. Hydrogen Fluoride is conveyed by rail, road, and sea. Air transport is available for Hydrogen Fluoride aqueous solutions, and prohibited for the anhydrous form of this substance. Steel containers with rubber lining are recommended for storage and transportation of both anhydrous and the solution form of the chemical. The anhydrous form is usuall preferred for shipping. It is shipped as a liquid confined under its own vapor pressure. Hydrogen fluoride must be stored in cool, dry, and ventilated areas away from the sun's rays.
Hydrogen Fluoride Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Hydrogen Fluoride are listed below.
- Fluorspar + sulfuric acid (acidification)
Hydrogen Fluoride Uses. The uses and applications of Hydrogen Fluoride may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Hydrogen Fluoride are: anhydrous gas (99.9 wt % purity); aqueous solution (38 wt%, 50 wt%, or 70 wt% HF).
