About Ethylhexanol
About Ethylhexanol. 2-Ethylhexanol ranks, after the lighter alcohols (methanol to butanol), as the most important synthetic alcohol. It is an eight-carbon branched chain alcohol and appears as a clear, colorless liquid, with a characteristic odor. It is an organic solvent miscible in almost all organic solvents and practically insoluble in water and one of the most important oxo alcohols commercialized.
The production on a commercial scale of this alcohol is based on the aldol condensation of n-butyraldehyde (n-butanal) and the hydrogenation of the hydroxyaldehyde formed. In fact, 2-EH is commonly produced in integrated complexes based on OXO processes, where n-butanal is first obtained by hydroformylation of propylene, and then converted into the aldol, dehydrated and hydrogenated to 2-ethylhexanol; n-butanol and isobutanol can also be produced.
Ethylhexanol Handling. 2-Ethylhexanol is a very flammable liquid (flash point at 77°C), so it should be transported and stored away from heat, sparks, flame, or other sources of ignition. It should also be kept in tightly closed containers, away from strong oxidants, acids, or bases, in an area without drain or sewer access, preferably with ventilation along the floor. Like other alcohols, 2-Ethylhexanol does not attack standard metals and can be transported in iron drums, tank trucks, or railway cars made of standard steel, aluminum, or stainless steel.
Ethylhexanol Production. Commercial production of 2-Ethylhexanol is based on n-butyraldehyde raw material, in such a way that different manufacturing routes are related to different sources of such raw material. Butyraldehyde, in turn, is obtained primarily from propylene via oxo processes; other routes, such as catalytic dehydrogenation of n-butanol or from acetaldehyde, are insignificant. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Ethylhexanol are listed below.
- propylene + synthesis gas (Shell hydroformylation process; coproduced with isobutanol/n-butanol),
- n-butyraldehyde (aldol condensation/hydrogenation)
Ethylhexanol Uses. Typically, Ethylhexanol is commercialized in a high-pure grade, with a 99.5 wt% minimum purity.
In this context, the main applications of 2-EH are in the production of: 2-ethylhexanol esters (plasticizers); 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, used in coating materials, adhesives, printing inks, impregnating agents, and reactive diluent/cross-linking agents; 2-Ethylhexyl nitrate, used as cetane improver; 2-Ethylhexyl phosphates, used as lubricant additives; and surfactants.
