About Ethyl Acetate

About Ethyl Acetate. Ethyl Acetate (a.k.a. EA, Ethyl Ethanoate) is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic fruity odor. It is the ester of ethanol and acetic acid and it is largely used as a polar aprotic solvent. It is miscible with oxygenated and chlorinated solvents. This compound occurs naturally in fruits and is found in alcoholic beverages, as it is a 'Saccharomyces cerevisiae' metabolite.

Like other organic esters, Ethyl Acetate is generally produced on a commercial scale by a Fischer esterification, in which an alcohol (ethanol) reacts with an organic acid (acetic acid) in the presence of acid catalysts (e.g., sulfuric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, or ion-exchange resins of the sulfonic acid type). Other routes for Ethyl Acetate production include the dimerization of acetaldehyde in the presence of alkoxide catalysts and the addition of acetic acid to ethylene in the presence of clay and hetero-polyacid catalysts.

Ethyl Acetate Handling. Ethyl Acetate is flammable, in such a way that it should be kept tightly closed in cool areas away from heat, sources of ignition, and incompatible substances like oxidizing agents, strong acids, and strong bases. If stored in tanks, a nitrogen blanket and a carbon filter are necessary. Metallic materials (e.g. mild steel, aluminum) can be used for storage and transportation.

Ethyl Acetate Production. Ethyl Acetate is primarily manufactured via the esterification route from acetic acid and ethanol. However, several other processes can also be used: in the first process developed, Ethyl Acetate is produced from acetaldehyde via the Tishchenko reaction. New production pathways have also been explored, like the ethanol dehydrogenation route. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Ethyl Acetate are listed below.

  • Acetaldehyde (Tishchenko reaction),
  • Ethanol + acetic acid (ester formation),
  • Ethylene + acetic acid (addition),
  • Vinyl acetate (hydrogenation),
  • Ethanol (Davy dehydrogenation process)

Ethyl Acetate Uses. The uses and applications of Ethyl Acetate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Ethyl Acetate are commercial grades (85-88%; 95-98%; and 99% purities) and urethane grade (99.5% purity)
