About Ethane

About Ethane. Ethane is an organic compound, in the paraffinic hydrocarbon class. It is a colorless, odorless gas, very sparingly soluble in water but soluble in ether, alcohol and highly soluble in benzene. Ethane is the second-largest component of natural gas, the first one being methane. First synthesized in 1834, ethane is today mostly used for ethylene production. Ethane consumption in the United States has increased during the past several years, being the most consumed hydrocarbon gas in the US since 2013.

Ethane Handling. Ethane is stored as a cryogenic liquid since it is an extremely flammable gas at room temperature. Exposure to elevated temperatures can cause ethane to decompose. Avoid contact with oxidizing materials such as chlorine, halogens, oxygen, and ozone. Direct contact with liquid ethane can result in severe frostbite. At storage and transportation, ethane should be handled with care as ethane vapors can displace the oxygen available for breathing since they are heavier than air. If the vapors encounter an ignition source, the chemical reaction can flash back to the source of ethane from which they evaporated. Due to being a relatively difficult gas to liquify and transport in bulk, Ethane is traditionally not traded overseas, but instead transported through pipeline hubs to consumers, mostly other industrial facilities. It can, however, be transported in ethylene carriers, ships equipped with type C semi-pressurized containment systems, with capacities ranging between 1500 and 15000 cubic meters.

Ethane Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Ethane are listed below.

  • Natural gas (fractionation)

Ethane Uses. The uses and applications of Ethane may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Ethane are technical grade (95% purity); chemically pure (CP, 99% purity) grade; research grade (99.999% purity); and ultra high-purity (UHP, 99.95% purity).
