About Diethylene Glycol
About Diethylene Glycol. Diethylene Glycol (a.k.a. DEG, Dihydroxy Diethyl Ether) belongs to the glycol ether family, characterized by alcohols containing two hydroxyl groups on separate carbon atoms. This colorless and nearly odorless liquid possesses a sweet taste and a viscous consistency. Unfortunately, DEG gained notoriety due to global incidents where its misuse, often as a substitute for pharmaceutical-grade glycerin or propylene glycol, resulted in severe poisoning and fatalities.
Diethylene Glycol Handling. DEG is transported and stored in large drums, usually made of plastic, lined with baked-phenolic resin, an air-drying epoxy-phenolic resin or vinyl resin, or stainless steel or aluminum. Zinc or galvanized iron is not recommended and copper or copper alloys may cause product discoloration. Diethylene Glycol is not flammable, but it is toxic to humans if swallowed. If extremely low water content is required in long storage or transportation periods, then a nitrogen blanket is recommended to be used in storage tanks to protect product quality, specifically, the moisture content.
Diethylene Glycol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Diethylene Glycol are listed below.
- Ethylene oxide (hydrolysis, coproduced with ethylene glycol and triethylene glycol)
Diethylene Glycol Uses. The uses and applications of Diethylene Glycol may vary according to its specification. Usually, Diethylene Glycol is traded with a 99% minimum purity, with a maximum water content.
