About Diethyl Ether
About Diethyl Ether. Diethyl Ether (a.k.a. DEE, Ethoxyethane, Ethyl Ether) is a colorless, volatile, and highly flammable liquid with an ethereal odor. It is used extensively as a solvent in both industrial and academic research laboratories and it is a starting fluid for some engines. It used to be an important inhalation anesthetic agent until non-flammable drugs were developed. Substitutes for Diethyl Ether in various applications include other solvents like tetrahydrofuran (THF), dioxane, and other ethers, depending on the specific use case. In some applications, alternative solvents or processes might be chosen to avoid the use of Diethyl Ether due to its flammability and potential health risks.
Diethyl Ether is primarily produced as a by-product during the vapor-phase hydration of ethylene to ethanol, using solid-supported phosphoric acid catalysts. Alternatively, it can be synthesized on both laboratory and industrial scales through acid ether synthesis, in whcih ethanol reacts with a strong acid like sulfuric acid, resulting in the formation of DEE.
Diethyl Ether Handling. Diethyl Ether should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from oxidizing agents and direct sunlight. It is best stored in mild steel containers, with the option of nitrogen blanketing for added safety. For transportation, suitable options include tin-plate cans, mild steel drums, and aluminum containers. Due to its poor conductivity, precautions against static electricity are crucial; therefore, grounding equipment like pipelines, pumps, and containers is essential. Air pressure should never be used during transfers, and appropriate labeling is mandatory for transportation.
