About Coconut Oil

About Coconut Oil. Coconut Oil (a.k.a. Crude Coconut Oil) is an edible oil extracted from the meat of kernels of mature coconuts. Its high saturated fat content gives it slow oxidation properties, making it resistant to rancidification, allowing it to last up to six months. The oil can be extracted from both dry or wet processing. Health Organizations around the world advise limited consumption of coconut oil due to its high saturated fat content.

Coconut Oil Handling. Coconut Oil should be stored in a cool place below 24 °C since it has a low melting point. Coconut Oil is transported in ships with capacities of up to 40,000 tons and in road and rail tankers. Containers are preferably constructed of stainless steel, coated with an intern material on the inside, such as phenolic epoxy resins. On the other hand, copper and its alloys should not be used for this end.

Coconut Oil Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Coconut Oil are listed below.

  • Copra (expression/alkali refining)

Coconut Oil Uses. The uses and applications of Coconut Oil may vary according to its specification. In the international market, Coconut Oil is usually commercialized in the crude form. Other forms of the oil are unrefined (virgin), refined (RBD), and hydrogenated (for warm climates).
