About Cobalt Metal
About Cobalt Metal. Cobalt is a grey, ductile, and ferromagnetic metallic element. The metal is present in nature in dispersed form so that it is commercially produced as a by-product of the mining and processing of other ores, such as copper and nickel, in a way that its output cannot be increased without an increase in the market of the primary metals.
Cobalt Metal Handling. It must be stored in a sealed container, in a cool and dry area. Also, it is necessary to protect from acids.
Cobalt Metal Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Cobalt Metal are listed below.
- Cobalt sulfide ores + limestone + coal (smelting),
- Nickel matte/nickel-copper matte + hydrogen (pressure leaching/reduction; coproduced with nickel),
- Lateritic ore (pressure leaching/solvent extraction/electrolysis; coproduced with nickel),
- Copper-cobalt sulfide ores (ore roasting/acid leaching/electrolysis; byproduct of copper production)
Cobalt Metal Uses. The uses and applications of Cobalt may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Cobalt are blocks, rings, inserts, and segments with a 99.8% minimum purity.
