About Cobalt Hydroxide
About Cobalt Hydroxide. Cobalt Hydroxide (a.k.a. Cobalt Hydrate; Cobaltous Hydroxide) is a red powder, insoluble in water but soluble in most organic and inorganic acids and ammonium salt solutions, the reason why it is widely applied to produce other cobalt chemicals. The hydroxide is commonly manufactured by the reaction between a cobalt (II) salt solution and sodium hydroxide after the extraction of cobalt ores. More than half of the world's mining comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa. From there, it is transported via road to Southern African Ports and shipped to refining facilities in China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, North and South America, and the EU.
Cobalt Hydroxide Handling. Cobalt Hydroxide should be stored in a dry and well-ventilated place, usually at a temperature of 15-25 °C in tightly closed containers. Crude and refined Cobalt Hydroxide are typically traded in the form of powder and containerized before being shipped for long distances.
Cobalt Hydroxide Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Cobalt Hydroxide are listed below.
- Cobalt sulfate + sodium hydroxide (salt formation)
Cobalt Hydroxide Uses. Cobalt Hydroxide can be traded in three primary forms: crude ex-mines (about 30 wt% cobalt content), partly refined with high moisture content (lumpy paste form), and refined powder (about 62.5 wt% cobalt content). Half of global crude-grade production originates from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is shipped worldwide for refinement for use in medical and technical applications.
