The price of Coal Tar Pitch (United States) increased during March 2025 to 1,050 USD per metric ton, which represents a slight rise of 4% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, the prices of Coal Tar Pitch (United States) decreased significantly by 7%. Meanwhile, the average price of Coal Tar Pitch (China) amounted to 503 USD per metric ton, from 653 USD per metric ton one year earlier. About Coal Tar Pitch
About Coal Tar Pitch. Coal Tar Pitch is a black and viscous liquid that is obtained during the distillation of coal after all distillates are removed. There are many different chemicals in Coal Tar Pitch, but the two largest classes are phenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is mainly used in the making of pavements and it has medicinal uses in the treatment of skin diseases in low dosages as it is a potential carcinogen in higher amounts.
Coal Tar Pitch Handling. Coal Tar Pitch must be stored in tightly closed containers in a well-ventilated area. It is highly odorous, may be detrimental to other cargoes, and is combustible at high temperatures. Leakage is a considerable risk according to wear of drums. The most suitable packing for the tropics are sealed metal containers. The solid pitch is not considered a dangerous good for transport according to international transport regulations. Liquid tar products are generally transported in bulk in insulated mild-steel road or rail tankers. They are loaded at a temperature sufficiently high to ensure delivery at the desired viscosity. Small quantities are generally delivered in drums that may have to be steam-heated to ensure complete liquidity before discharge.
