About Butyl Acrylate

About Butyl Acrylate. Butyl Acrylate, the butyl ester of acrylic acid, is one of the main acrylates, along with methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate. The term acrylates refers to derivatives of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, such as salts and esters. These compounds have been known since the nineteenth century. However, only in the 1930s difficulties associated with their production and polymerization were overwhelmed. Over the past decades, acrylates have been building blocks of major importance, widely used in emulsion and solution polymers.

Butyl Acrylate is highly reactive and polymerizes spontaneously under normal conditions. Butyl Acrylate polymerization is catalyzed by heat, light, and peroxides and inhibited by the monomethyl ether of hydroquinone or hydroquinone itself in the presence of oxygen.

This chemical can be produced in several reactions, from acetylene, 1-butyl alcohol, carbon monoxide, nickel carbonyl, and hydrochloric acid, among other chemicals. On an industrial scale, Butyl Acrylate is produced from ester-grade acrylic acid and butanol, in plants typically integrated to acrylic acid facilities. All Butyl Acrylate commercial processes are based on esterification, differing mainly in terms of the catalyst system, recycling of alcohol, and quality of the Butyl Acrylate produced.

Butyl Acrylate Handling. Since Butyl Acrylate polymerizes readily under normal conditions, it is stored under air and in the presence of phenolic inhibitors, in stainless steel or aluminum tanks.

Butyl Acrylate Production. Butyl Acrylate is primarily made from acrylic acid and butanol, in such a way that different Butyl Acrylate manufacturing routes are related to different sources of such raw materials. In this context, typical Butyl Acrylate production routes are based on acrylic acid manufacturing, mostly via propylene oxidation and to a lesser extent oxidative carbonylation of ethylene. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Butyl Acrylate are listed below.

  • n-butanol + acrylic acid (ester formation)

Butyl Acrylate Uses. Usually, Butyl Acrylate is traded in a commercial grade, with purity higher than 99%.
