About Bromine

About Bromine. Bromine (a.k.a. Br2) is a dense, dark red, fuming, highly corrosive, and lacrimatory liquid. Liquid bromine is always dark red, whereas, bromine vapors are usually orange to red brown. It is miscible with chlorine in all proportions, yielding an equilibrium mixture containing the interhalogen bromine chloride (BrCl). Many chemical reactions of bromine are a result of its moderately strong oxidizing properties.

Bromine Handling. Larger bulk shipments of bromine use lead- or nickel-lined tank cars or tank trucks. The latter must be filled to a minimum of 98 % of capacity before shipping to avoid inertia effects in transport. Bromine must be stored and transported away from incompatible materials and compounds, as it is a powerful oxidizing agent capable of igniting combustibles on contact and reacting vigorously (and sometimes explosively) with potassium, aluminum, iron, steel, stainless steel, copper, and some forms of plastics, rubbers, and coatings. Because of that, lead- and glass-lined steel must be used to transport and store it. It must be kept in dry places, away from moisture, as the highly corrosive bromine vapor may form acids. Dry nitrogen gas is recommended for use in pressure transferring bromine, although dry air may be used.

Bromine Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Bromine are listed below.

  • Seawater + chlorine (cold debromination process),
  • Brine, residual, bromine-rich/natural brines + chlorine (hot debromination process)

Bromine Uses. The uses and applications of Bromine may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Bromine are laboratory reagent grade (LR, 99.0% minimum purity); technical grade (99.7% minimum purity); chemically pure grade (CP, 99.8% minimum purity); and American Chemical Society reagent grade (ACS, 99.95% minimum purity).
