About Ammonium Nitrate

About Ammonium Nitrate. Ammonium Nitrate (a.k.a. AN) is an inorganic salt with colorless and odorless crystals that are soluble in most organic solvents. The salt is hardly found in nature, for its high water solubility. It was first described in 1659 and, currently, is the most commercially important ammonium compound in production volume and usage terms. Its great importance comes from the fact that the salt incorporates nitrogen and makes it readily available, in both of the forms that plants and crops use: nitrate ion and ammonia.

Ammonium Nitrate Handling. Ammonium Nitrate is not itself flammable, but it should be handled with extreme caution, transported and stored away from heat sources and other reactive material. It is a strong oxidizer, capable of supporting and intensifying combustion of a wide range of substances when heated, even when air is excluded. Ammonium nitrate requires high energy to explode, however, when it does, it has around 70% of the strength of nitroglycerine. If heated, the salt can also release dangerous toxic fumes (consisting of nitrogen oxides).

Ammonium Nitrate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Ammonium Nitrate are listed below.

  • Ammonia + nitric acid (neutralization reaction),
  • Apatite + ammonia + nitric acid + carbon dioxide (Odda process, byproduct of nitrophosphate production)

Ammonium Nitrate Uses. The uses and applications of Ammonium Nitrate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Ammonium Nitrate are 20.5% nitrogen; 33.5% nitrogen; fertilizer grade; 83% aqueous solution; and temperature stabilized grade.
