About Aluminum Fluoride
About Aluminum Fluoride. Aluminum Fluoride (a.k.a. Aluminum Fluoride) is a white, crystalline, odorless, anhydrous powder. Up to 1975, aluminum fluoride production was based almost entirely on hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen fluoride. From 1975 to the present day, the use of fluosilicic acid has gained a lot of attraction, mainly for its easy recovery and high production volume (sub-product in phosphoric acid manufacture); however, it is still behind the HF process.
Aluminum Fluoride Handling. Aluminum fluoride must be kept under a blanket of inert gas because it is extremely reactive with air, moisture, and chemicals with active hydrogen. It is recommended an outside or detached storage area, in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated space. If the solutions contain a maximum of 20% of this inorganic compound in non-reactive solvents, they can be manipulated without risk of spontaneous ignition.
Aluminum Fluoride Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Aluminum Fluoride are listed below.
- Alumina trihydrate + hydrogen fluoride (salt formation),
- Alumina trihydrate + hydrofluoric acid/hexafluorosilicic acid (salt formation/calcination),
- Alumina trihydrate + fluosilicic acid (salt formation)
Aluminum Fluoride Uses. The uses and applications of Aluminum Fluoride may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Aluminum Fluoride are technical grade; chemically pure (CP) grade; and hydrate aluminum fluoride.
