About Activated Carbon
About Activated Carbon. Activated Carbon is a solid composed primarily of carbon atoms, processed to have a porous structure and a large internal surface area. Such unique characteristics confer adsorptive properties that make Activated Carbon widely used in a range of applications.
This nonhazardous, carbonaceous material can be produced on commercial scale from several carbon-containing feedstocks, such as coal, lignite, wood, pitches, and cokes. Commercial processes for Activated Carbon production are based either on physical activation, where the raw material is converted by thermal decomposition followed by controlled gasification, or chemical activation, based on the dehydrating action of certain substances.
Activated Carbon is widely found in chemical processes, but depending on the application, it can be replaced by zeolites, treated clays, activated alumina, molecular sieves, and many other porous materials.
Activated Carbon Handling. This product is usually transported in containers lined or covered with plastic, or in bags, drums, and boxes, in weights ranging from about 10 to 35 kg. Care must be taken during storage to avoid both weather damage and contact with organic vapors that harm Activated Carbon adsorption performance.
Activated Carbon Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Activated Carbon are listed below.
- Hardwood/peat/coconut shells (chemical activation process),
- Coal/hardwood/peat/coconut shells/lignite (gas activation process)
Activated Carbon Uses. The uses and applications of Activated Carbon may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Activated Carbon are powder; granule; and cylindrical or spherical pellets.
