About Acetonitrile
About Acetonitrile. Acetonitrile (a.k.a. Ethanenitrile, Cyanomethane, Ethyl Nitrile, Methyl Cyanide) is a highly flammable and colorless liquid with an ethereal odor that may cause irritations when inhaled. Long-term exposure to this nitrile results in headaches, numbness, and tremors. It is miscible with water, oxygenated, and chlorinated solvents, but not with aliphatic hydrocarbons.
Acetonitrile Handling. Acetonitrile is a highly flammable and toxic liquid, it must be stored in tightly-sealed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away ignition sources. It is also not compatible with strong acids, strong bases, and reducing or nitrating agents. The transportation of this chemical is typically carried in 10,000-gallon DOT-103 insulated or non-insulated tank cars with safety valves, nevertheless acetonitrile is also shipped by roads and waterways in similar containers and adequate safety precautions.
Acetonitrile Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Acetonitrile are listed below.
- Propylene + ammonia (ammoxidation, co-produced with acrylonitrile and hydrogen)
Acetonitrile Uses. The uses and applications of Acetonitrile may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Acetonitrile are technical grade; pharmaceutical grade; and food grade.
