This report presents the economics of Polytrimethylene Terephthalate (PTT) production from terephthalic acid and raw sugar in the United States. The process portrayed in the report combines a process similar to DuPont process for generating propanediol from raw sugar and a process similar to Degussa (now Evonik) process for producing PTT from propanediol and terephthalic acid.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Polytrimethylene Terephthalate production and related Polytrimethylene Terephthalate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Polytrimethylene Terephthalate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Polytrimethylene Terephthalate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Polytrimethylene Terephthalate plant operating costs (Opex).

The Polytrimethylene Terephthalate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Polytrimethylene Terephthalate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Polytrimethylene Terephthalate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Polytrimethylene Terephthalate Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

Polytrimethylene Terephthalate. Polytrimethylene Terephthalate (a.k.a. PTT) is an aromatic polyester that can be employed in textile and carpet fiber applications since it presents a set of properties quite suitable for such applications. It is a semicrystalline polymer that has many of the same advantages as its polyester cousins, PBT and PET. Polytrimethylene Terephthalate is produced by reacting 1,3-propanediol with terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate. The value of PTT as a commercial polymer has been enhanced as more economical and efficient methods of producing 1,3-propanediol (PDO) have been developed.

Raw Materials

Raw Sugar. Raw sugar is a commodity product which is light brown in color and presents from 96 to 99 wt% of sucrose. Since it is not an edible product, it must undergo a refining process to become a refined sugar (more than 99.9 wt% sucrose), a product suitable to food applications. This may be accomplished in the same sugar factory where raw sugar was produced or in stand-alone refineries. It is commercialized as a granular product, and can be produced either from sugarcane or sugarbeet, depending on climate conditions. Sugarcane is cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas, while sugarbeet is more suitable to temperate zones.

Terephthalic Acid. Terephthalic Acid is the most important dicarboxylic acid. It is obtained by catalytic, liquid-phase air oxidation of p-xylene. Most of the terephthalic acid produced commercially is purified to then be consumed as precursor to saturated polyesters, primarily PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and, to a lesser extent, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate).

Medium-Purity Terephthalic Acid Production

This report presents the economics of Medium-Purity Terephthalic Acid (MTA) production. The analysis is based on a plant located in the United States starting from p-xylene using a typical catalytic oxidation process. In this process, p-xylene is oxidized to terephthalic acid (TPA). Then, the TPA is crystallized and recovered from the liquor and MTA is obtained as the final product.
