This study presents a techno-economic analysis of LAO production from ethylene in the United States. In this report, a process similar to INEOS process is analyzed, producing linear alpha-olefins ranging from C4 to C16+, mainly C6 to C10. Ethylene oligomerization is carried out in a reaction with triethylaluminum produced on site, increasing the chain of the alkyls bonded aluminum.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Linear Alpha Olefins production and related Linear Alpha Olefins production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Linear Alpha Olefins production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Linear Alpha Olefins plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Linear Alpha Olefins plant operating costs (Opex).

The Linear Alpha Olefins production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Linear Alpha Olefins plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Linear Alpha Olefins plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Linear Alpha Olefins Production Cost Report Process Schematic

The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Ethylene Oligomerization; and (2) Products Fractionation.

Ethylene Oligomerization. Fresh ethylene feed is fed to the chain growth reactor and in small amounts to the Triethylaluminum (TEA) Synthesis, along witha solution of aluminum powder, hydrogen and hydrocarbons. The generated TEA is sent to the chain growth reactor. In this reactor, Ethylene charge is rapidly dissolved in the catalyst solution and oligomerized. The reactor effluent is sent to a vapor-liquid separator, which separates unreacted ethylene, recycled to the reactor upstream, from a liquid stream that is routed to Light Olefins Separation.

Products Fractionation. The Light Olefins column recovers C4-C10 olefins, which are directed to the butene column in the Alpha Olefins columns section. The Light Olefins Column's bottom product is sent to the Heavy Olefins Separation. This column separates C12-14 hydrocarbons - which are routed to the dodecene column in the Alpha Olefins columns section - from tri-alkyl aluminums and heavier olefins, that are sent to the TEA Recovery system along with ethylene. In the TEA Recovery system, TEA is regenerated through a displacement reaction, in which non-ethyl alkyl groups bonded to the aluminum are displaced by Ethylene. Regenerated TEA is separated from ethylene and alpha olefins, and recycled to the Chain Growth Reactor. Ethylene is also separated and recycled to the compressor, while the higher olefins are sent to the Alpha Olefins Columns. In the Alpha Olefins Columns, subsequent separations steps take place, removing the lightest olefin in the stream. Each separated alpha olefin is sent to storage. The bottom stream from each column, containing heavier olefins, is routed to the next column, until 1-tetradecene is withdrawn from the last column.
