This report presents the economics of Furfuryl Alcohol (FFA) from furfural via a hydrogenation process. In this process, furfural is hydrogenated in the liquid phase, producing FFA. The economic analysis presented assumes a plant constructed in the United States.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Furfuryl Alcohol production and related Furfuryl Alcohol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Furfuryl Alcohol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Furfuryl Alcohol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Furfuryl Alcohol plant operating costs (Opex).

The Furfuryl Alcohol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Furfuryl Alcohol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Furfuryl Alcohol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Furfuryl Alcohol Production Cost Report Process Overview
Product

Furfuryl Alcohol. Furfuryl Alcohol (a.k.a. 2-Furanmethanol) is an organic compound containing a furan substituted with a hydroxymethyl group. It is the largest volume furfural derivative, produced by the hydrogenation of furfural in the presence of a reduced copper catalyst. This process is possible in vapor-phase reaction or liquid-phase reaction, with the former being the most employed industrially. Furfuryl Alcohol appears as a colorless or pale yellow liquid with a mild odor, which forms an azeotrope with water at atmospheric pressure. It is soluble in most organic solvents, such as alcohols, ether, chloroform, and benzene. Furfuryl Alcohol can be subjected to a series of chemical reactions, including alkylation, cycloaddition, esterification, etherification, hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, oxidation, and halogenation.

Raw Materials

Hydrogen. The hydrogen molecule, H2, is the normal state of pure hydrogen, even though hydrogen can be found in its atomic form under specific conditions. It is a very stable molecule, not usually reactive under normal conditions. Essentially, molecular hydrogen is produced industrially by three different methods: hydrocarbons steam reforming, hydrocarbons partial oxidation and water electrolysis. Hydrogen can also be obtained as a by-product recovered in processes such as the manufacture of styrene from ethylbenzene.

Furaldehyde. Furaldehyde is an organic compound used as a solvent, fungicide, and precursor in the production of resins and plastics. Its chemical reactivity makes it a valuable intermediate in various industrial processes. Furaldehyde is produced from agricultural byproducts such as corncobs and oat husks. It is stored as a liquid and is used in industries ranging from agriculture to chemical synthesis.
