Commodity Production Costs Report
Carbon Disulfide Production
Carbon Disulfide Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report presents the economics of a plant for Carbon Disulfide production from sulfur and natural gas in the United States. Molten sulfur is vaporized in a furnace and reacted with hot natural gas, yielding Carbon Disulfide. The gaseous reaction products are cooled and subjected to a series of purification steps for removing excess sulfur and recovering high-purity Carbon Disulfide liquid.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Carbon Disulfide production and related Carbon Disulfide production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Carbon Disulfide production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Carbon Disulfide plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Carbon Disulfide plant operating costs (Opex).
The Carbon Disulfide production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Carbon Disulfide plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Carbon Disulfide plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Product
Carbon Disulfide. Carbon Disulfide is a volatile liquid used primarily in the production of rayon, cellophane, and carbon tetrachloride. It is valued for its solvent properties and ability to react with various chemicals in industrial processes. Carbon Disulfide is produced through the reaction of carbon and sulfur at high temperatures. It is stored as a liquid and is essential in industries producing fibers and solvents.
Raw Materials
Sulfur. Sulfur is an abundant, multivalent non-metal of great importance in the chemical industry. It is a key raw material, mainly used in the form of Sulfuric Acid and sulfur dioxide. In its elemental form, sulfur is used in the production of carbon disulfide, rubber, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Elemental sulfur can be produced from a variety of sources, and through a number of different techniques. It is frequently obtained as by-product from petroleum refining, natural gas processing and coking plants, for instance.
Natural Gas. Natural gas is a naturally occurring mixture of hydrocarbon found in porous subsurface geologic formations. It is composed mainly of methane, but also contains varying amounts of higher hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane, and butane. Additionally, natural gas may also include non-hydrocarbon components considered impurities such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Natural gas is primarily used as a source of heat energy for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. It may also be used in the production of important chemicals such as ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen.
