Commodity Production Costs Report
Calcium Carbide from Limestone (Oxy-Thermal Process)
Calcium Carbide Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This study approaches the economics of Calcium Carbide production from limestone and coke in the United States via a oxy-thermal process. This process is based on the combustion of the carbonaceous material with oxygen in the presence of lime (generated by calcination of limestone raw material).
The report provides a comprehensive study of Calcium Carbide production and related Calcium Carbide production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Calcium Carbide production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Calcium Carbide plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Calcium Carbide plant operating costs (Opex).
The Calcium Carbide production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Calcium Carbide plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Calcium Carbide plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Product
Calcium Carbide. Calcium Carbide is an essential industrial chemical used in the production of acetylene gas and calcium cyanamide, and as a reducing agent in steelmaking. It also finds use in desulfurization processes. Calcium carbide is produced by heating lime (CaO) and coke in an electric arc furnace. It is stored as solid lumps and must be kept dry due to its reactivity with water.
Raw Materials
Limestone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock consisting mainly of calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate. It commonly contains some magnesium carbonate as a secondary component. Limestone deposits cover about 10% of the planet’s surface, and are found in the majority of countries.
Petroleum Coke. This kind of coke is a by-product of the oil refining process.
