Caffeine Production from Tea Waste

Caffeine Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

1.2 kta United States-based plant | 107 Pages | Issue A | Q3 2024
Starting at $1,999 USD | See Report Editions Prices

This report presents the economics of a typical Caffeine production process from tea leaves waste in the United States via an extraction process.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Caffeine production and related Caffeine production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Caffeine production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Caffeine plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Caffeine plant operating costs (Opex).

The Caffeine production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Caffeine plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Caffeine plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Caffeine Production Cost Report Process Schematic

The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Caffeine extraction; and (2) Caffeine refining.

* Caffeine extracton. First, the tea leaves waste undergoes a solid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate, which removes caffeine and other soluble compounds from the biomass. The solution formed is concentrated as most of the solvent is evaporated and recovered. The caffeine is then transferred to an aqueous phase by means of a liquid-liquid extraction. Again an evaporation step follows to concentrate the solution, which proceeds to refining steps.

* Caffeine refining. The aqueous caffeine solution goes through two batteries of activated carbon treatment and crystallization to form pure caffeine crystals. The activated carbon captures the non-caffeine solutes, which are discarded. The caffeine crystals are then dried and packaged for storage.

Ethylene Glycol Production from Carbon Dioxide

This study presents the economics of Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) production from carbon dioxide (CO2) in the United States using an electrochemical process similar to Liquid Light process. Initially, CO2 is electrochemically reduced and acidified into oxalic acid. Then, oxalic acid is esterified with methanol producing dimethyl oxalate, which is hydrogenated forming MEG.

Maleic Anhydride from Butane (Fixed-Bed Reactor + Solvent-Based Recovery)

This feasibility study presents an analysis of Maleic Anhydride production from n-butane in the United States using a process similar to the one developed by Huntsman. In this process, maleic anhydride is produced by the partial oxidation reaction of n-butane with oxygen carried out in a fixed-bed reactor, using a vanadium–phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalyst supported on silica. The reactor effluent is directed to a solvent-based recovery system for Maleic Anhydride separation.
