ICC - Process Overview Text: <h6>Product</h6> <p><b>Sodium Hypochlorite Solution</b>. Sodium Hypochlorite (a.k.a. Liquid Bleach, NaOCl) is the active constituent in chlorine bleach, a strong oxidizer and bleaching agent. This salt is the most remarkable of all hypochlorite forms and has been widely used since the 1930s. Nowadays, it is the most used hypochlorite bleach, accounting for more than 90% of global use, while calcium hypochlorite corresponds to the remainder.</p> <h6>Raw Materials</h6> <p><b>Chlorine</b>. Chlorine figures among the most important chemical commodities. It is an indispensable intermediate in the chemical industry, employed in the manufacture of a multitude of end products (e.g. materials of construction, solvents, pesticides, etc). Most of chlorine produced on commercial scale is based on electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride (brine), which also generates caustic soda and hydrogen as co-products (chlor-alkali processes).</p> <b>Sodium Hydroxide</b>. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), also known as caustic soda, is a major inorganic used in several industries. Most of caustic soda production is used in the manufacture of chemicals, such as propylene oxide and sodium salts, however, the pulp and paper, soap and detergent, and textile industries are also great areas of application. Electrolysis of sodium chloride accounts for most of today’s installed capacity for caustic soda production, which also generates chlorine.</p>

ICC - Process Schematic Text: <p>The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Reaction and product discharge; and (2) Bleach filtration.</p><p>Reaction and product discharge. The chlorine absorption system can be divided into two parts: in the first, a packed column is operated with a safe excess of caustic to prevent reduction in pH; the second part, in turn, receives the liquor from the first column to be postchlorinated, until the desired bleach concentration is reached. Prior to reaction, caustic soda is diluted with water in the first buffer tank, along with first column bottom stream. Chlorine is diluted with air and fed into the bottom of both columns. Flow to the second part of the system is established when the finished product is being sent to the filtration steps.</p><p>Bleach filtration. Bleach filtration is necessary to meet product quality requirements and is often the last step before storage. Usually, the bleach filter system consists of pressure-leaf filters. After filtration, the product is sent to storage. Backwash water containing spent filter aid can be taken to a dry-cake pressure filter for further processing. Sodium hypochlorite solutions are very sensitive and this type of operation prevents its decomposition. Besides pH, other factors affecting degradation are bleach initial concentration, exposure to UV light, presence of certain metals and elevated temperatures. The graph below shows temperature dependency in bleach degradation, starting from a 12.5 trade % solution.</p><p></p>
