Commodity Production Costs Report
Food-Grade Riboflavin Production
Riboflavin Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report presents a cost analysis of food-grade Riboflavin production via a typical direct fermentation process using glucose as carbon source in the USA. In the process examined, Riboflavin is produced by fermentation of a glucose syrup. After fermentation, the broth is pasteurized for the inactivation of the microorganisms, Riboflavin is recovered by centrifugation, subjected to a mineral acid treatment, re-crystallized for further purification, dried and packed. The final product obtained is 99 wt% Riboflavin (food-grade).
The report provides a comprehensive study of Riboflavin production and related Riboflavin production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Riboflavin production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Riboflavin plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Riboflavin plant operating costs (Opex).
The Riboflavin production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Riboflavin plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Riboflavin plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Product
Riboflavin. Riboflavin (a.k.a. Vitamin B2, Lactoflavin, Vitamin G, Ovoflavin, Lyochrome, Hepatoflavin, Uroflavin) is a vitamin widely found in plant and animal cells. It occurs in its free form in eye’s retina, in whey, and in urine, but it fulfills its metabolic function mainly in complex forms. First isolated back in the 1930s, Riboflavin was produced for the first time only in 1940, by fermentation from the residue of butanol–acetone fermentation. Over the years, this vitamin has been produced via chemical synthesis and fermentation for different uses and applications, mainly related to therapeutic uses and for poultry and livestock feeds.
Raw Material
Glucose Syrup. Glucose (C6H12O6), also known as D-glucose and dextrose, is the most abundant sugar in nature. Commercial glucose products are available in both dry and syrup forms in a variety of purities and concentrations. Glucose uses include pharmaceuticals, food, chemicals and fuels. This compound is used as raw material in fermentative processes for the production of vitamins, organic acids, antibiotics, amino acids, enzymes, and polysaccharides.

Glucose Syrup Production
This report presents the economics of Glucose Syrup production from shelled corn. In this process, shelled corn is passed through a wet milling process to recover the corn starch, which, in turn, passes through two subsequent hydrolysis steps for the generation of glucose. The economic analysis performed assumes a plant located in the United States.
