Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of TMP-Propylene Oxide Polyether production in the United States. In this process, Polyether is produced from propylene oxide using trimethylolpropane (TMP) as starter in the base-catalyzed alkoxylation reaction.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Polyether production and related Polyether production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Polyether production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Polyether plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Polyether plant operating costs (Opex).
The Polyether production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Polyether plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Polyether plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Polyether. Polyether is a class of organic substances produced by polymerized monomers by ether links which may be structured in chain or network. It is a diverse group of polymers most notably polyethylene glycols, polypropylene glycols, epoxy resins and phenoxy resins.
Raw Materials
Propylene Oxide. Propylene Oxide (PO) is a major commodity chemical. This highly reactive compound is starting material for several products, from polymers and solvents to industrial fluids. Commercially, Propylene Oxide is produced mainly by the so-called chlorohydrin process, based on the reaction of propylene and chlorine in the presence of water to produce propylene chlorohydrin, which is dehydrochlorinated with a base (caustic or lime). PO may also be produced on commercial scale by the oxidation of propylene by organic hydroperoxides – the so called indirect oxidation routes – yielding alcohols as by-product.
Trimethylolpropane. Trimethylolpropane is a triol used as a building block in the production of alkyd resins, polyurethanes, and plasticizers. Its functionality makes it essential for producing flexible, durable coatings and foams. Trimethylolpropane is produced by reacting formaldehyde with n-butyraldehyde. It is stored as a solid or liquid and remains in high demand for its versatility in the plastics and coatings industries.
