Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Nitrile Gloves production from nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) latex. In this process, hand-shaped formers are dipped in a bath of NBR latex. The latex is deposited on the former, which subsequently enters a curing oven where it is submitted to high temperatures to be cured. The gloves are then dipped in a polymer dispersion bath to apply a coating, cooled and, finally, stripped out of the formers. The economic analysis performed assumes a plant located in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Nitrile Gloves production and related Nitrile Gloves production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Nitrile Gloves production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Nitrile Gloves plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Nitrile Gloves plant operating costs (Opex).
The Nitrile Gloves production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Nitrile Gloves plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Nitrile Gloves plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic
The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) Glove Production; (2) Finishing & Packing; and (3) Cleaning
Glove Production. NBR latex is mixed with compounding chemicals in a tank and is left to mature to produce the final latex mixture. Clean hand-shaped formers are first dipped in a coagulant bath and then in a bath of the produced latex to fixate it in the surface and create the gloves. The film formed over the formers is dried to a gel then leached in warm water to remove chemical residues. In sequence the former enters a curing oven where the latex becomes rubber and goes through changes in physical properties due to the heat and the compounding chemicals.
Finishing and Packing. The gloves still on the formers are then leached again to remove other chemical residues. In sequence, they are dipped in a liquid polymer dispersion bath to apply a coating. After that, the wrist section of the gloves are beaded. Finally, the gloves are cooled and stripped out of the formers. They are then conveyed to the packing area while the formers are sent to a cleaning step.
Cleaning. The now glove-free formers are submitted to an acidic bath with diluted nitric acid. They are then washed before being passed through a diluted caustic soda bath to complete the cleaning of remaining latex or chemicals. After the caustic bath, the formers are rinsed with water and ready to restart a new cycle.
