Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Hexane production from crude glycerol in the United States. In this process, crude glycerol is reformed in aqueous phase, generating a range of hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds, including Hexane. Part of these compounds undergoes aldol condensation and hydrodeoxygenation, raising Hexane yield.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Hexane production and related Hexane production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Hexane production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Hexane plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Hexane plant operating costs (Opex).
The Hexane production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Hexane plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Hexane plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Products
n-Hexane. Hexane is a liquid alkane widely used in the chemical industry. This hydrocarbon can be isolated from light gasoline, BTX raffinates, etc, by superfractionation or by molecular sieve separation. The main applications of hexane are as a solvent in chemical reactions, in adhesive formulations and for the extraction of vegetable oils.
Butane. Butane is an essential component of the oil and gas industry, used primarily as a fuel and a feedstock for the petrochemical sector. It is a highly flammable hydrocarbon and serves in various applications such as blending with propane in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for domestic and industrial heating, as well as in the production of gasoline and synthetic rubber. Butane is typically extracted from natural gas or crude oil refining. It is stored as a liquid under pressure or at low temperatures, ensuring ease of transport and handling.
Raw Material
Glycerol. Crude glycerol is a byproduct of biodiesel production, containing impurities like methanol and soaps. It is used in animal feed, as a raw material for chemical synthesis, and in biogas production. Collected from transesterification processes, it is stored as a viscous liquid. Purification can yield refined glycerol for pharmaceuticals and personal care products.
