ICC - Process Overview Text: <h6>Product</h6> <p><b>Epichlorohydrin</b>. Epichlorohydrin is a key raw material in the production of epoxy resins and glycerol, widely used in coatings, adhesives, and elastomers. It is valued for its reactivity and versatility in chemical manufacturing. Epichlorohydrin is produced by reacting allyl chloride with hypochlorous acid. It is stored as a liquid and must be handled with care due to its hazardous nature.</p> <h6>Raw Materials</h6> <p><b>Sodium Chloride</b>. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the salt naturally occurring in sea water. Sodium chloride (as aqueous solution, i.e., brine or solid) is widely used in the chemical industry as a feedstock for the production of chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and other sodium-based compounds through electrolysis.</p> <b>Glycerol</b>. Crude glycerol is a byproduct of biodiesel production, containing impurities like methanol and soaps. It is used in animal feed, as a raw material for chemical synthesis, and in biogas production. Collected from transesterification processes, it is stored as a viscous liquid. Purification can yield refined glycerol for pharmaceuticals and personal care products.</p>

ICC - Short Description: This report presents the economics of Epichlorohydrin (ECH) production from glycerol and sodium chloride in the United States. Initially, brine is decomposed electrolytically in a membrane cell, producing chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen. The hydrogen and chlorine react forming hydrogen chloride (HCl). Finally, glycerol is reacted with HCl, generating dichlorohydrins (DCH), which are hydrolyzed to ECH by the caustic soda.
