About Butanediol
About Butanediol. Butanediol (a.k.a. BDO, 1,4-Butanediol, Bio-Butanediol) refers to all four stable butylene glycol isomers. All are colorless liquids. Usually, Butanediol is referred to the 1,4- Butanediol, which is industrially used as a solvent and an intermediate for some plastics and polymers.
BDO can be produced from different raw materials. The conventional method starts with acetylene. Other processes use propylene oxide, maleic anhydride, or 1,3-butadiene. It is mainly produced by continuous hydrogenation of the 2-butyne-1,4-diol over modified nickel catalysts. Other routes include acetoxylation of butadiene and hydroformylation of allyl alcohol. Alternatively, BDO may also be manufactured through routes based on renewable sources, involving, for instance, the fermentation of glucose syrup followed by succinic acid hydrogenation or the direct fermentation of glucose. In such cases, it may be referred to as Bio-Butanediol or Green Butanediol.
Butanediol Handling. 1,4-Butanediol is a chemical that can be stored indefinitely. If it is necessary to store this product for long periods, storage tanks of steel or aluminum may be necessary to avoid traces of iron in the material. Also, it is advised a cover of dry nitrogen. Since it is a noncorrosive material, it can be transported in cast iron containers.
Butanediol Production. On an industrial scale, BDO has been made primarily via hydrogenation of butynediol. Production pathways based on acetoxylation of butadiene and hydroformylation of allyl alcohol have also come on stream in the past years. Most recently, in light of growing environmental concerns, some biological routes have emerged as well. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Butanediol are listed below.
- maleic anhydride (methyl ester formation/hydrogenation; coproduced with tetrahydrofuran),
- allyl alcohol + synthesis gas (hydroformylation),
- 1,4-butynediol (hydrogenation),
- butadiene + oxygen + hydrogen (Mitsubishi process; coproduced with tetrahydrofuran),
- succinic acid (hydrogenation)
Butanediol Uses. The uses and applications of Butanediol may vary according to its specification. Usually, Butanediol is traded with a 99.5-99.8 % purity and a melting point between 19.9 and 20.0 °C.
