About Aniline

About Aniline. Aniline (a.k.a. Phenylamine, Aminobenzene, Benzenamine) is the simplest of the primary aromatic amines. Commercial-scale production of Aniline is predominantly based on the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene with hydrogen. In the last century, aniline has become one of the most important building blocks in chemistry and one of the most produced nitrogen compounds worldwide.

In fact, while most of nitrobenzene is consumed in Aniline manufacture, almost all Aniline production sites are integrated to nitrobenzene manufacture. To a smaller extent, Aniline is also manufactured via ammonolysis of phenol, in specific cases where there are integrated production sites and phenol feedstock availability.

Aniline Handling. Aniline is transported in drums, containers for the transportation on rail, water and street, railway tank cars and tank trucks as well as in tanks of ships for river and sea transportation. It is flammable (flash point at 70 °C), so it should be transported and stored away from heat sources. Aniline has been used as rocket fuel and is a constituent of some explosives, so it reacts violently with oxidizing agents, possibly causing explosions. Aniline is also slightly corrosive to some metals, such as copper, brass and other copper alloys. It is recommended to be stored and transported in 400-series stainless steel containers.

Aniline Production. Aniline was produced on commercial scale for the first time back in the 1850s, via reduction of nitrobenzene in the presence of hydrogen chloride. Currently, aromatic amines production pathways are mostly based on reduction of the nitro compounds, ammonolysis of aromatic halides or phenol and direct amination of aromatic rings. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Aniline are listed below.

  • Nitrobenzene + hydrogen + concentrated mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid (catalytic liquid or gas phase hydrogenation, metal catalyst),
  • Nitrobenzene + iron + hydrochloric acid (nitro reduction),
  • Phenol + ammonia (ammonolysis)

Aniline Uses. The uses and applications of Aniline may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Aniline are reagent grade (99% minimum purity); technical grade (99.5% minimum purity); and pure/commercial grade (99.9% minimum purity).
