About Polyvinyl Alcohol
About Polyvinyl Alcohol. Polyvinyl Alcohol (a.k.a. PVOH, PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic thermoplastic polymer. It is usually available in film, pallets or aqueous solution, with the film having oil resistance, toughness and high tensile strength. Polyvinyl alcohol has a good biocompatibility, biodegradability and hydrophilicity, making it one of the few materials that can be used in biomedical fields. Its main uses are in the paper, plastic, fishing and medical/pharmaceutical areas.
PVA is commercially produced mainly via transesterification of poly(vinyl acetate) with an alcohol. Another possible route is saponification (hydrolysis) of poly(vinyl acetate) in an alkaline methanol medium. PVA differs from other vinyl polymers in that it is not obtained by polymerizing its pure monomer, given the instability of vinyl alcohol.
Polyvinyl Alcohol Handling. PVA is supplied in up to 25 kg bags equipped with a moisture barrier to prevent caking. It is also avaiable in bulk or in super sacks. Polyvinyl alcohol is not flammable and very little toxic, although it should be kept away from heat sources, since it might decompose into dangerous gases.
Polyvinyl Alcohol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Polyvinyl Alcohol are listed below.
- Polyesters + organic alcohol (mainly methanol and ethanol) (hydrolysis, followed by base-catalyzed transesterification)
Polyvinyl Alcohol Uses. The uses and applications of Polyvinyl Alcohol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Polyvinyl Alcohol are super (+99% hydrolyzed); fully (98 to 99% hydrolyzed); intermediate (90 to 98% hydrolyzed); and partial (85 to 89% hydrolyzed).
