About Pentaerythritol. Pentaerythritol (a.k.a. PER) is an organic compound in the polyol class. It is an odorless white solid, with four hydroxyl groups in its structure, allowing the attachment of four groups (similar or not), and, hence, the synthesis of greatly branched compounds/structures. For this characteristic, pentaerythritol and its derivatives have a wide variety of applications.
Pentaerythritol Handling. Pentaerythritol is hygroscopic, so in transportation and/or storage it absorbs water and undergoes slow changes in structure. Its transportation and storage should be done in hermetically closed containments. It is not flammable and has low toxicity to humans. Pentaerythritol is usually shipped in 25 kg polypropylene bags with polyethylene liner, and specialized soft containers with capacities between 500 and 1000 kg.
Pentaerythritol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Pentaerythritol are listed below.
- Acetaldehyde + formaldehyde (poly-addition, followed by a Cannizzaro reaction or an aldol condensation)
Pentaerythritol Uses. The uses and applications of Pentaerythritol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Pentaerythritol are technical grade (88% monopentaerythritol and 12% dipentaerythritol); nitration grade (minimum 98.7% monopentaerythritol); and chemically pure grade (CP, minimum 98% monopentaerythritol).
Intratec Methodology. Intratec Primary Commodity Prices are produced from a data-driven, mathematical approach, which starts with the extraction of data from various primary sources, including official trade records, futures market, statistics bureaus, governmental and international agencies. Such large volume of data is validated through advanced data processing techniques, and treated by means of statistical analysis for outliers removal. When faced with input gaps, data scientists and engineers employ mathematical models or machine learning techniques to estimate prices and ensure the completeness of the price assessments presented.
