About Dioctyl Phthalate
About Dioctyl Phthalate. Dioctyl Phthalate (a.k.a. DOP, DEHP, Diethylhexyl Phthalate) is a non-volatile colorless liquid, insoluble in water, and with a mild odor. Generally, it is obtained from the butyraldehyde dimerization, and corresponds to the phthalate ester of 2-ethylhexanol. In Western Europe, about half of all plasticizers used is made of Dioctyl Phthalate, as it presents mid-range properties. Therefore, the use of this substance is controlled by the European Union, being the primary hazard the threat to the environment as it can easily penetrate the soil and contaminate groundwater.
Dioctyl Phthalate Handling. Dioctyl Phthalate should be stored in tightly closed containers. It must be kept in cool, well-ventilated areas away from heat and sources of ignition. It is relatively inert, thermally stable, with high flash point and low volatility. Consequently, it can be stored safely in mild steel storage tanks or drums for extended periods of time. Exposure to high temperatures for extended periods, as encountered in drums in hot climates, is not recommended since it may lead to a deterioration in product quality with respect to color, odor, and electrical resistance.
