About Aluminum Oxide
About Aluminum Oxide. Aluminum Oxide (a.k.a. Aluminum(III) Oxide, Alumina, Aloxide) is a white and crystalline powder. It occurs naturally in the form of many minerals such as bauxite and corundum. Aluminum Oxide is amphoteric in nature, which allows it to be used in various chemical and industrial applications. Its properties may vary depending on the crystalline structure.
Aluminum Oxide Handling. Aluminum Oxide is usually transported and stored in moisture-proof containers (for its strong desiccating characteristic), such as bags, sling bins, or drums. Fine dust can cause some irritation in the eyes and/or lungs, so handling must be done with the appropriate breathing apparatus. Alumina is nontoxic and nonflammable, so no other special measures must be taken in, besides common-sense for good housekeeping.
Aluminum Oxide Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Aluminum Oxide are listed below.
- Bauxite + sodium hydroxide (Bayer process),
- Ethylene + aluminum (Epal process),
- Alumina trihydrate (calcination),
- Aluminum ores (such as kaolinite, anorthosite, etc) + sodium carbonate (alkaline process),
- Aluminum ores (such as kaolinite, anorthosite, etc) + strong acid (such as hydrochloric acid) (acid process)
Aluminum Oxide Uses. The uses and applications of Aluminum Oxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Aluminum Oxide are technical grade; high purity; chemically pure (CP) grade; fused; calcinated; and fiber.
