Carbon Monoxide (a.k.a. CO) is a toxic gas created from the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing compounds, the reduction of carbon dioxide or the decomposition of organic compounds (e.g. aldehydes). It is very dangerous in enclosed space because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless. This industrial gas has many applications in chemical industry, medicine and metallurgy. Commercial production of Carbon Monoxide is mostly based on steam reforming of natural gas or petrochemicals, and on coal gasification, in which the Carbon Monoxide itself is a co-product, along with hydrogen, of synthetic gas (syngas) production. The Carbon Monoxide may be separated from the syngas and purified by pressure swing adsorption and cryogenic distillation, among other technologies.
