Valeraldehyde (a.k.a. Pentanal) is a linear saturated aldehyde which is slightly soluble in water and soluble in alcohol and ether. It appears as a colorless liquid, less dense than water, and moderately volatile. It occurs naturally in essential oils and a variety of foods including scrambled eggs, baked potatoes, apples, and fried chicken. On industrial scale, valeraldehyde is produced by hydroformilation, also called oxo process, which involves the reaction of olefins with synthesis gas. In this case, the olefin employed is 1-butene, and the reaction is carried out in low pressures in the presence of rhodium complex catalysts. Valeraldehyde can also be produced by the oxidation of 1-pentanol.
