About Sodium Silicate. Sodium Silicate (a.k.a. Waterglass) is a generic term that refers to a series of compounds with varying proportions of sodium oxide and silicon dioxide, sometimes referred to as the simplest form of glass. It appears as a colorless to white powder or flaked solid, soluble in water in various amounts. Sodium Silicates can be produced by treating a mixture of silica, caustic soda, and water, with hot steam in a reactor, or by dissolving silica in molten sodium carbonate.
Commercial Grades. 40 °Bé; 47 °Bé; and 52 °Bé.
Uses. Sodium Silicate is mainly used in the manufacture of soaps and detergents; paper deinking and bleaching; water treatment; ore treatment; drilling fluids; and chemical equipment lining. It is also employed as adhesive for paper cardboard; bleaching and sizing agents of textiles and paper pulp; flame retardant; and binder for abrasive wheels.
