Propanediol (a.k.a. PDO, Trimethylene Glycol, 1,3-Propanediol, Bio-Propanediol) is a three-carbon diol compound, which appears as a colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid, soluble in water, ethanol and ether. Propanediol is usually produced by hydration of acrolein, or via hydroformylation of ethylene oxide and subsequent hydrogenation of the intermediate 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde. It may also be produced by microorganisms using renewable sources, such as corn syrup and glycerol, as feedstock. In such cases, it may be referred to as Bio-Propanediol or Green Propanediol.
