About Polyvinylidene Chloride. PVDC Resins (a.k.a. Polyvinylidene Chloride Resins, Vinylidene Chloride Copolymer) are clear semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymers, that were among the first synthetic ones to be commercialized. They are produced by the polymerization of a vinylidene chloride monomer with other monomers such as acrylic esters and unsaturated carboxyl groups. Their most valuable property is low permeability to a wide range of gases and vapors.
Commercial Grades. emulsion latex and solid resin. In addition, a number of comonomers can be used with different composition in the PVDC production (e.g., vinyl chloride, acrylic acid, and acrylonitrile).
Uses. Since PVDC offers excellent barrier resistance to oxygen, moisture, organic vapors and odors, it is extensively used in packaging applications for food, hygiene products, pharmaceuticals, and sterilized medical products. Its applications also include binders (wallpaper coatings); fire-resistant emulsion paints; and textile/carpet coatings.
