About Polyvinyl Acetate. Polyvinyl Acetate (a.k.a. PVA, White Glue, Wood Glue) is a thermoplastic high polymer, and one of the most important poly(vinyl esters) together with vinyl acetate copolymers. It appears as a colorless transparent solid, insoluble in water, gasoline, oils and fats, but soluble in low molecular weight alcohols, esters, benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons. PVA is produced by polymerization of vinyl acetate with peroxide catalysts.
Commercial Grades. Food Chemical Codex (FCC) grade and British Pharmacopeia (BP) grade.
Uses. The main uses of PVA are in adhesives and coatings. It is also used in concrete additives; coatings for paper; binders for nonwoven fabrics; sealants; shatterproof photographic bulbs; component of lacquers; inks; and plastic woods.
